 BBC channels in Normandy
« Thread Started on Nov 16, 2008, 10:32am »

Can anyone give me the benefit of experience with receiving BBC channels in Normandy? I have a Sky mini-dish connected to a Sky digibox (Panasonic TU-DSB45) and receive all FTA channels bar BBC. I am assuming this is down to bad reception of Astra 2D beam because its footprint shows my location in France as on the 0.5M dish border. The location in France is approx 130Km south of Caen and is on the border of the departments of Normandy and Pays de la Loire. I think I can resolve my problem by upgrading to a 0.6M dish but would be interested to hear any comments or similar experiences to confirm before I go ahead.

Regards,

PhilipJ

You should be able to receive something in Normandy, even on such a small dish. It could just be poorly aligned, though a bigger dish will give more stable reception.

Must be a poorly aligned dish and/or failing LNB. A Sky minidish is OK to receive 2D in this area, as the centre of the beam is only just across the channel in south-east England.

In Spain: Prodelin 1.8m offset, Invacom QDF-031/ChannelMaster feedhorn. Lacuna/Wolsey V3 meter. In UK: Pace 2600CI, Humax Freesat HDR, Thomson SKY+ HD

Is it just the BBC channels at 101 and 102? What about BBC3 and BBC4? What about the regional variations on channel 971 onwards?

Thanks for your comments guys.

PaulR. in answer to your question, it is all BBC channels including the regional ones and also the BBC radio channels. I do receive the channels occasionally but more often that not the receiver gives me a "There is a technical fault with this channel...." message.

Regard,

PhilipJ

PaulR,

As a postscript to my last post, I can't confirm that I don't get any of the regional BBC channels but I know I don't get some of them. On my next visit I was going to check whether I could get the regional channels with a Vertical orientation. Is it possible that I could have a problem that only affects reception of channels with a Horizontal orientation?

That was going to be my next question/suggestion!

Quite possible. This could point to either the receiver or the LNB I'm afraid.

Thanks Paul - its good to have a second opinion. I have another receiver in the UK so I'll take that out with another LNB and try them out on my next trip - possibly this weekend. I will post details of the outcome.

Take a multimeter with you. You can measure the voltage on the LNB input connection on the back panel of the receiver to see whether it changes when you move between channels which are on H and V transponders.
