 Freesat in Finland
« Thread Started on May 22, 2008, 3:33pm »

Hi all, ;D

Im new here and a total beginner in the world of astra2d sat dishes and the like so please be gentle. Also not sure as to wether i should start a new thread or not so if it needs to be moved then please do so.

Anyway im an english guy living in salo finland about 80km from helsinki towards the west and about 55km from turku and I have a few questions that I would like answering if possible in the easiest way possible.

1. I have ordered my humax foxsat box from my sister in england I read in another thread that it asks you your postcode at startup will this be an issue?

2.I also read that I will need a 2.4m dish i saw one for about 400euros but it was a fortec primefocus should I really avoid this dish like the plague? if so please recommend one as I really cant find any in finland apart from this one i dont mind shipping from sweden as long as the price is right but dont really want to spend 800 euros or up.

3. once I have the dish and box is there anything else I need apart from invacom (lnb?) i.e what wires do I buy if any? do I need a funny arm thing that you put the (lnb?) on ? etc etc

I really appreciate it if someone actually reads this as I really do not want to get ripped off from these shops that think they know what they are talking about and try and fob me off with unrequired equipment.

Desperatly wanting to watch some english tv feeling a bit homesick.

this is a map of where i live for reception is it o.k?

You do want to avoid the FortecStar dish, 400 euros is a lot for something which won't work properly.
If this is all your budget will go to you can try it but don't be surprised if you are disappointed.
Try to find a good dish secondhand? Share with a neighbour?
If you want the BBC you may have to get a decent quality 2.4m dish.
1.8m may not work completely, you may lose some channels.
A 2.4m dish is going to be some thousands of euros, a 1.8m about a thousand.
Unfortunately, if you are buying a Freesat box you have little alternative but to try to get Astra 2D, otherwise you will have very few channels to watch.
Correct assumption as to Freesat and postcodes, you can do a re- set and choose a different one if you find the BBC region is not strong enough signal.
You will need a LNB and some decent cable- and someone to put it up.

Any good satellite cable, preferably with a copper outer. If the run is short- less than 30 metres it does not matter much which kind, as long as it is satellite cable.
The type of Invacom you buy is dictated by the type of dish.
You can get 2.4m prime focus dishes within your budget- just- and for these you will need the Invacom C120 twin or quad.
You shouldn't have any problem getting the Freesat EPG on a large dish.

excellent thanks again i checked where the sat direction is and it is at the back of the house where the lounge is so i only need a couple of meters 5m max to be safe and i have a clear view of the sky plus i live on a huge hill(hope that is an advantage).anyway thanks for your help I will see if i can now find another dish around the same budget rather than that fortec if i have to spend more then i will i guess it will just take a while longer to get it. ;)

Famaval make a 230 cm prime focus dish, if you can find this in your area, would be within budget, they sell for about 600 euro.

You could try contacting ApexSat in Germany.
They will not sell you one directly but may have someone closer to you as a distributor.

thanks for the links I will check them out and see what happens .600 euro is a bit of a stretch but highly possible and not that bad if I want a decent dish.

Hi Snap!

How do you rate the Famval dishes compared to a Prodelin or Andrews? Is there a significant difference in quality?

Cheers,

Martin

I've never worked on one, but the general opinion on them is that they are average performers.
An aluminium dish such as Famaval (Portugese) or Gibertini (italian) is vulnerable to damage when moved, rough treatment will ruin a dish.
They also suffer from distortion caused by changes in temperature. In hot countries, this is an issue. Andrew or Prodelin dishes are much more robust and do not have the same problems. The inner mesh inside a composite dish can be much more accurate, which is why these American-made antennas perform so well. Mechanically, they are easier to adjust, allowing the set-up to be more precise. Tiny movements of millimeters in elevation and azimuth can make a huge difference to weak signal. Andrew have the best fine- tuning adjustments of any dish.
